Dawn Toomey is the sort of person you meet once in a blue moon. The sort of person dedicated to finding good people around her and lifting them up into rising stars. She’s kind, compassionate, fiercely dedicated, and gave up a full time job to join Penny Miller. And the most inspiring part? She didn’t do it for herself.
Dawn Toomey used to work in a warehouse as a forklift driver. Her “daily grind” involved carting goods to and fro around industrial warehouses. ‘I loved it,’ says Dawn in her husky English accent. ‘I did it for fifteen years.’ But Dawn’s lifestyle rapidly changed three years ago when her partner became ill and was hospitalised. With her partner bedridden and unable to work, Dawn stepped up and took the baton. That is to say, she dropped her career of fifteen years and began filling in for her partner, who had previously been a Zone Manager for Penny Miller.
Acting at first as a Distributor-come-Area Coordinator in Sydney’s Quakers Hill in place of her partner, Dawn quickly became eagerly involved in her work. She received one-on-one training and was hitting the footpaths in her local community as soon as she could. ‘I just love walking and communicating,’ she says. ‘At first [the training] was easy… I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ongoing training supported me, and I picked it up very quickly.’ The flexible hours meant that Dawn was able to dedicated herself to her work during school hours and care for her family – including six children between her and her partner – outside of school hours.
I just committed myself to job and got recognised for my consistency and capability.
Dawn’s dedication to her role grew fast and fiercely. From Distributing and acting as an Area Coordinator for her partner, Dawn developed into a role where she is now a Zone Manager for the greater Parramatta region in Sydney’s western suburbs. Dawn is in charge of looking after no less than seven Area Coordinators and eighteen Distributors. According to Dawn, she now aims to ‘recruit, train and motivate’ in her managing role. Dawn says that the success stories of other Distributors and ACs is what motivates her.
I’m not in it for me, I’m in it to see people beneath me succeed and grow. I want to see them thrive and grow and reach their maximum potential.
Dawn now works from home as well as at the office and on the footpath training new Area Coordinators. After three years in the Penny Miller team, she still loves to walk and communicate – whether with potential customers, trainees or new recruits. ‘It keeps me going,’ says Dawn. ‘There’s always something to do every day.’
Although Dawn’s current role is predominantly office-based, she hasn’t lost sight of her main goal: to help others at Penny Miller grow to their full potential. Dawn says that witnessing the growth of others is what she enjoys most about being a part of the Penny Miller team. ‘I’m fully supportive to see people grow,’ she says. Dawn reiterates that ‘the Distributors are key to business. Without them none of us have a job.’
My focus is to recruit, train and motivate.
‘It’s been successful all the way through,’ says Dawn of her experience with Penny Miller, and she can’t help but mention again her support for seeing the people in her area grow to their full potential. ‘I’m not gonna leave in a hurry, that’s for sure.’
Penny Miller is thrilled to have Dawn on board. Congratulations to Dawn for her success at Penny Miller, and may she continue to inspire us with her kindness, compassion and dedication.
